Post Upgrade time
Ahead of BF4 this week I've been contemplating an upgrade. Before I start talking options, here's the the BF4 specs from the official website;

Minimum
OS - WINDOWS VISTA SP2 32-BIT (WITH KB971512 PLATFORM UPDATE)
PROCESSOR -AMD ATHLON X2 2.8 GHZ / INTEL CORE 2 DUO 2.4 GHZ
MEMORY - 4 GB
GRAPHICS CARD - AMD RADEON HD 3870 / NVIDIA GEFORCE 8800 GT
GRAPHICS MEMORY - 512 MB
HARD DRIVE - 30 GB

Recommended requirements:
OS - WINDOWS 8 64-BIT
PROCESSOR - AMD SIX-CORE CPU / INTEL QUAD-CORE CPU (@ 3Ghz according to BF4Central)
MEMORY - 8 GB
GRAPHICS CARD - AMD RADEON HD 7870 / NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 660
GRAPHICS MEMORY - 3 GB (???? not sure how this works as neither of the above cards are 3GB??)
HARD DRIVE - 30 GB

* Currently I'm running an i5 750 @ 2.67Ghz and a Radeon HD5770 (1gb).

Firstly, GPUs - having done some research I was strongly favouring the Nvidia GTX760 which was close to my initial budget. It is very well reviewed and outperforms the ATI 79503Gb with boost (especially on BF3) which is around the same price range or a bit cheaper. That said, for about $50 - $60 more I could get the ATI 7970oc / R9280X which has 3Gb Vram and may be a bit more future proof.

I've also been reading a bit about overclocking the i5 750 and it appears I can get 3.2Ghz without much effort or extra juice. So I'm thinking about going down that path...quite a step for this noob.

Any thoughts?

First though is that I'd wait until after you're up and running with BF4 before making a move mate. Sounds like you'll get away with running it anyway.

Yeah I'm sure I'll be able ro run it but i would like to get close to it's full potential. It may be an idea to wait for some feedback from the actual game as opposed to just the beta but that requires patience

Yeah, patience. Who's got any of THAT?!

FYI to highjack your thread (sort of), 24 hours short of BF4 I am now suffering complete system failure with BSOD and all the bells and whistles. I might be in the market for an upgrade myself!

evidentally, NVidia are reducing prices / introducing more range into the 780 odd series, so I would seriously advise you to hold out just for a little while for a GPU upgrade. The 760, 780 could quite well come down in price a bit.

The other option is to possibly explore the avenue of a pre-owned graphics card that is a higher level to what you'd like to buy, but at a price you'd be happy with. (My current GPU is testament to this)

I've now decided to scrap AMD as NVidia seems to have noticeable better and smoother performance in games

Just to touch a little more on that mate, my bud bought 2 GTX 780s and saved around 130odd each on them brand new, due to the price drops. Still around $630 odd, but the 780 is a great card for bf3
